Five Nights at Freddy’s” is a horror thriller that adheres to a security guard as he navigates a gang of unsettling animal robotics. The film, which was adjusted from a prominent computer game collection, was composed by a group of three co-writers: Scott Cawthon, Emma Tammi, and Scott Cuddeback. Regardless of its PG-13 rating, the flick includes some gory moments that followers of the video game may be stunned by. In addition, the film’s 110-minute runtime may be unanticipated given the busy and heavily edited nature of many scenes.

The film’s eerie atmosphere and overarching narrative will come as no surprise to fans of the video game series, who are already familiar with these elements. However, while the movie’s atmosphere is certainly effective in conveying the sense of unease that makes the games so popular, the plot itself is somewhat formulaic and predictable.

Tammi’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” often feels like a pre-teen dream of what a horror movie should be, full of incidental details that tease deeper and stranger avenues to be explored in future spinoffs. If you like the games, you like poking around the characters’ world and learning about their backstories, which have grown exponentially stranger and more elaborate after various sequels and side project expansions. The movie’s main story is anemic by comparison, though it’s still sturdy enough, given its creators’ diligent attention to familiar dialogue and story beats.

Security guard Mike (Josh Hutcherson) agrees to watch over Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a family-friendly pizzeria and video game arcade that shut down in the 1980s after some mysterious child disappearances. Mike would rather not work the night shift at a decrepit “Chuck E. Cheese”-type entertainment center, as he tells the friendly but mysterious cop Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail). Then again, Mike’s job prospects are slim, and he needs money to keep custody of his sister Abby (Piper Rubio).

If Mike can’t maintain a job, his manipulative aunt Jane will take custody of Abby, not out of genuine concern for the child’s well-being, but to exploit the situation for financial gain. Mike is also plagued by recurring nightmares involving the abduction of his younger brother Garrett, which become increasingly distressing and vivid while he’s working at Freddy’s. Additionally, the restaurant’s animatronic animals have been known to come to life at night, their ghostly presences adding to the already unsettling atmosphere.

Mike’s story probably could never have been as compelling as the sheer presence of Freddy (Kevin Foster), a lumbering animatronic bear, and his pals, Bonnie (Jade Kindar-Martin), Chica (Jess Weiss), Cupcake, and Foxy. Still, why bother with a character-driven story if your source material is a video game whose main charm stems from its players’ ability to explore a haunted and increasingly threatening environment?

Employing Tammi seemed promising initially due to the atmospheric nature of her 2019 horror-western film “The Wind,” which relies more on creating a mood rather than a strong storyline. The highlights of “Five Nights at Freddy’s” demonstrate Tammi’s ability to craft immersive details that suggest hidden memories and dark mysteries, such as a spilled soda on a picnic table in Mike’s dream or the flickering light bulbs at the entrance to Freddy Fazbear’s. However, there is an excess of nostalgic symbols that feel hollow, such as flickering TV screens, upbeat songs, and dated commercials. Nevertheless, it is commendable to see the filmmakers making a concerted effort to capture the essence of the video games by focusing on retro objects that can evoke a sense of the forgotten past.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” possesses many of the necessary components for a successful horror movie targeted towards children in the post-Amblin era, although it may lack strong dialogue and unique characters. The film gives off the impression that the games’ dark and eerie essence has been watered down into basic jump scares and uninteresting plot twists.

The film’s cast sometimes also suggests deeper emotions than their characters are otherwise allowed to express, especially Hutcherson and the woefully underutilized character actor Matthew Lillard, the latter of whom plays a career counselor who hires Mike to work at Freddy’s. It’s otherwise hard to enjoy spending this much time with characters whose relationships only ever develop because the story needs to progress.

The film’s pacing and acting leave much to be desired, making it difficult to fully invest in the characters’ relationships. While Abby’s quick bond with Freddy and the gang, as well as Vanessa’s knowledge of Freddy, are intriguing aspects, they aren’t fully explored. Unfortunately, the movie’s reliance on formulaic jump scares and unremarkable performances makes it difficult to become truly invested in the story. As a result, the film falls short of being either shocking or emotionally resonant. While fans of the series may find some enjoyment in “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” others may find it unsatisfying.
